This is how I am working during my vacation

Hvaler Storesand

I’m currently on vacation on an island in Norway. I’m living in a tent by the ocean, and so far, I’ve had a fantastic time. I’ve written about my vacation on this island before, in posts like this one, where I wrote about what I’m doing at 9 pm, and this one, where I wrote about why I’m walking 30 minutes to be online. I’m writing this post at close to 10 pm, and I can still see the sun, it’s an incredible feeling (this picture was taken about 7 pm).

I am working every single day

The reason I’m writing this post, is that I want to focus on how I’m working during my vacation. I’m a solopreneur, and even though I could have stopped working during my vacation, I am still working. But, I’m not doing as much work as I usually do. And, I’m doing things differently.

I’m focusing on spending time with my family. But, I’m still working a few hours every single day. I’m working less, and I try to tell my family when I’ll be working; when I’ll be leaving and when I’ll be back. I work in a different location every day. Sometime inside, at a public library, the town hall or a restaurant. Other times, I work outside, at the top of a mountain, inside a forest or on the beach.

I am using my iPad mini, my MacBook Pro, my iPhone or just paper. It all depends where I am and what I’m doing. I’m mostly doing creative work, and that’s because I’m more relaxed when I’m on vacation, than when I’m at the office. And, I’m reading a lot more than I’m used to. I’m reading posts, ebooks and articles on my iPad and I’m reading regular books.

At the moment, I’m almost finished reading The Icarus Deception by Seth Godin. I’ll probably write a review soon.

Are you working during your vacation?

  1. Boy this post sure brought back some memories. I’ve worked on vacation from mountain tops, in souks, at the beach and along the Thames. The family was almost always unsupportive of this activity. How does your family feel about you disappearing to work on vacation?

It is very good that you are always in touch with knowledge. All writer that have working habits , also work during vacation as it is part of their life.

LOVE this article! Yes – I am going on vacation Friday and I’ll be working almost every day. Just started with a new company/project and I’m thankful for the freedom to still spend summer with my kids — living life with them — not stuck in an office. My kids will be a bit bummed about it – but hey … vacation’s aren’t free! 🙂

    Hey Jens,

After reading this post, I find that you’re workaholic and hardly spend any free time. But for me vacation means spending time on fun or seat ideal. I don’t do anything fruitful on my vacations.

  6. Hey Jens,
It is truly inspirational to read about the fact that you can be on vacation and still get your work done. The truth is if you want to build your business to be strong and lasting you must be disciplined enough to put the effort in whenever and wherever.
