Why A Professional Design Is Important For Your Blog

As I’m writing this I have been using a free template on my blog for about a month. The reason for this is that I have switched from WordPress to Drupal. The design I had was created for WordPress.

I had to switch to Drupal without warning, and without doing any planning. I experienced the heaven and hell of blogging, all within the first week of December.

I am using a free template while I’m waiting for the designers to finish the new design for my blog. I’m suppose to get it implemented sometime tomorrow.

Now, I think it’s the right time to do some reflections when it comes to why I think every blogger should have professional and unique design and not a free one.

First impression

First impressions are important, probably way more important than most people understand. Many people base their impression on the look and feel of the blog. It usually only takes seconds before they start thinking; wow this blog is interesting, or this is not an interesting blog. This happens before they start reading any of the content. It’s important for a blog to stand out from the crowd and be unique, this way it will be recognizable and interesting.

It represents you

The problem with not being unique, is that you’ll be somebody you’re not. I’m not kidding, that’s a real problem. To me, being unique is what it’s all about. We are unique as people, and we are unique as writers/bloggers. The blog design should represent you, a unique blogger.

On the other hand, you might be lucky to find a not customized theme that just 1% of your visitors will see somewhere else. But should you take the chance?

Inspiration

When you have a design that represents you, one that you think is awesome, it’s a lot easier to write. It’s a lot easier to get inspiration. You understand what people coming to your blog for the first time will think. Yes, they’ll think, “Wow, what an awesome blog!” When you know this, it’s a lot easier to write.

Expectations

When people visit my blog and see a standard design, one they have seen at several blogs before, they’ll expect to see read just another blog post. If they see a brand new design, they’ll be more likely to expect to read something new, something they haven’t read before. A customized design sort of sets the standard for your blog. If it looks great, the content is probably awesome.

Don’t get me wrong. I have used many different free templates myself, and as you probably know, I’m currently using a free one. There are many awesome free templates. To me, free is not always the best, at least not when it comes to blog design.
