Why are salespages so long?

I have been reading hundreds of salespages for various products over the years, and they have one thing in common. Well, they have probably more than one thing in common – because they all look the same as well. But there’s one thing that I have been thinking about for a long time that I just had to get off my chest (or off my heart, can’t remember the expression – sorry I’m Norwegian).

Why are the salespages so long? It seems that they have written a novel on one webpage. I have actually never read a whole salespage for a product, and I will probably never do either. I understand that a salespage should have more than a few sentences and some good stories from people who recommends the product, but again – why so many and why so much text?

I think I have some of the answer. The longer you write, the more text, the more credible the salespage is. Can that be it? It have to be something, because everybody is doing it and everybody can’t be wrong! I usually read the top paragraph and then scroll down to the bottom to see the price. But that might just be me…

Update: I thought I would give you an example of a very popular something just as an example of what I think of as a long salespage (something every software/product out there has). Check out this link for the example.
