The Real Value Of Facebook Places?

If you haven’t already seen this video, take a look at it, it’s a promotion for Facebook Places (only available in the US at the moment).

Facebook places is a way to tell your Facebook friends where you are (and it’s a way to tell them what your favorite spots are – I think). But you will have to “check in” to the different spots in order for your friends to know where you are, Facebook Places doesn’t automatically track you.

Personal Value

I don’t really see the big picture when it comes to using Facebook Places for myself and my friends, at least not yet. If I’d like to meet one of my friends, I’ll call him or send him an SMS. I won’t check Facebook. I’m always contacting the people I’d like to meet, I don’t check where they are and then contact them or show up without telling them.

What I’m saying is that I’m not sure what my opinion of Facebook Places is. I don’t see how I’m going to use it, or why I’m going to use it, at least not yet.

But no doubt, it’s what Foursquare is already offering, and people seem to enjoy it.

Business Value

I understand the business value. If you own your own place on Facebook, you can use it for branding and to get more people to visit.

For instance, when a person visits your place (it could be a restaurant) and let their friends know that they have “checked in”, many of their friends will visit your place on Facebook to see what it’s all about (why their friend just checked in). If you’ve added customer reviews, your logo, the menu, images etc.. more people will find it interesting.

I’m not sure I understand the real value of Facebook Places just yet. I’d really like your opinion.
