sly : marketing

Thank you UPS

I just have to tell you this. I’m so happy, and surprised. And it’s all because of UPS (United Parcel Service). I’m not sure, but I think it’s the first time I have ever received a package from UPS (I live in Norway, and I don’t order a lot of things).

The text message

It all started with a text message early this morning. The text message was from the driver. He just wanted to ask me if I was home today, or if I wanted the package delivered somewhere else or at a specific time.

I sent him a text message saying that I was home, and at the same time I asked him when he would be arriving at my house. He said around 1 pm. That was it. Perfect communication, it was all I needed to know.

The order

I haven’t told you this, but I ordered a Kindle on friday. I ordered it from Amazon, and immediately I received a message that it would be delivered on April 13. I didn’t think much about it, other than that I thought it was fast delivery (5 days).

I live in Norway, and I am not used to fast delivery from the US.

The surprise

I didn’t believe my eyes when I saw the text message from the UPS driver. He was coming to my house today, two days earlier than what Amazon told me (my Kindle arrived at my house after only 3 days). I was thrilled. Immediately, I was thinking about Zappos and delivering happiness.

What marketing is all about

To me, customer service is the really important part of marketing. I am talking about doing the little extra for the customers. The driver from UPS was a very nice man, and he communicated with me in a brilliant way, and I received my Kindle two days earlier. It was perfect, and exactly what marketing is all about.

On the other hand, I didn’t need my Kindle two days earlier, but it made me really really happy. So, thank you UPS.

Now you can become an addict like I am 😛

      Hi Brankica,

I feel like I am addicted to my Kindle already 🙂

I ordered three books during the first 5 minutes after I turned it on. I’m a little worried though, it was way too easy to order books. I’m probably going to order books all the time.

Do you have a cover for your Kindle, or isn’t that necessary?

      • Brankica says:

I do but I got my Kindle with the cover as a present. And I do travel a looooot, so I move it from backpack to another backpack, it goes from plane to plane and airport to airport so it was necessary for me. But if you don’t plan to play football with it, I don’t think you really need one.

Then again, if you ordered 3 books in 5 minutes I am sure you have one cover ordered already, you don’t lose time at all, lol.

I text message from a dude…2 days before you expected it…hmmmm..sounds to me like someone is about to get raped lol

I used the old(er) Kindle DX…awesome little device…been meaning to get the new one but now Im afraid of getting raped lol (too much with the rape jokes? Are they funny in Norway?)

Speaking of Norway, I just found out that Thursday is named after the Nordic god Thor. As in Thor’s day. Isn’t that awesome 🙂 Cant wait for the movei 🙂

    • jens says:

      Hi Dino,

Yes, rape jokes are funny in Norway 🙂

I didn’t know about Thursday and that it was named after Thor. That’s awesome. I’m definitively going to watch the movie too 🙂

Wow, lucky you. I never get a text message or a heads up from ups when my items are about to arrive.

    • jens says:

      Hi Efren,

Usually, with all the other companies, I have never received a message. I remember when I ordered my iMac. I got home one day, and they had delivered it to my neighbor (not the ones living in the nearest house), people I hardly know. The iMac was outside on their porch – what a nightmare.

Finally I’m happy with the delivery guy 🙂

Thanks a lot for your comment.

That is SO cool Jens… Glad you got your first delivery from UPS and it was a Kindle too. Wow! Boy are you ever going to have fun with that. Happy reading! 🙂

    • jens says:

      Hi Adrienne,

I’m so excited for my Kindle, although I haven’t had the chance to read anything yet. Now, I’m just thinking about if I should order a cover for it or not 🙂

My girlfriend got me a kindle last week for my Birthday. I also was surprised because it took me two days to receive it. Not normal even for amazon, although it took couple of days to shipped, not normal either because it normally ship same day or next day depending on the time of my order. I’ve read more in the last 7 days than first three months of the year. =)

    • jens says:

      Hi RIc,

Wow, you are lucky. You must have the best girlfriend in the world. I had to buy mine. But nonetheless, it’s the best thing I have bought in years. Kindle is just amazing. As with you, I have read more during the past days than in months. Right now, I am reading three books at the same time, and it’s just perfect to read using the Kindle (and it was almost too easy to buy the books).

Thanks again for your awesome comments.

Hi Jens, Sorry I didn’t see this blog post earlier. What a great surprise! There are so many complaints about delivery people, what a treat to read about a great experience. And what a treat for you to get your Kindle early! I am so glad you are enjoying it.

I would definitely recommend a cover for your Kindle. Here is a link to a great site for Kindle Covers: M-Edge. You can get a custom made cover with your photos or one of their designs. I used my own photos to design a cover on their site and it turned out beautifully. They ship internationally too!

    • jens says:

      Hi Carolyn,

Yes, I hear a lot of complaining about delivery people, so when I got this experience, I just had to share it.

I just visited your link, and M-Edge seems to have some awesome covers. Thanks a lot.

      – Jens

I still feel like I am way behind… Probably because I am too busy to read anything but business-related stuff? LOL

    • jens says:

That’s like me then. After the horrific slaughter in Norway, all I have been doing for the past week is read about it and talk about it. Hopefully I can get back on track soon 🙂

  8. Amy says:

Really! I never though that UPS had a quality service. I should have known this before! Many Thanks!

  9. win says:

My country does not seem to have a UPS, I’m not sure. But with services like UPS, the process of sending and receiving packets is very fast. I’ll check it later.
