My First Client – I Am the Proudest Man Alive

You might have noticed that I am starting my own business. I’m both excited, and at the same time, I’m a little nervous. It was a hard decision. But it was the right decision.

I will keep blogging and I’ll keep writing fiction, and I’m not giving up when it comes to finishing my first novel and getting it published. It’s going to happen in 2012, that’s my one goal for this year.

But, I decided that I wanted to make a huge change in 2012. I want to start making a difference. I’m going to do that by starting my business on 1. April, and this means that I’m leaving the college (where I’m currently working).

I keep thinking that I’ll need to hustle to be able to support my family by doing this change, but I’m so excited about being able to make a living by sharing my marketing knowledge with more people and businesses. I love to work, and I keep doing my best to get things done and be as productive as possible. So, hopefully I won’t have to struggle every single month to make ends meet.

How I Got My First Client

I am a strong believer in inbound marketing, and to me, this means that I’m not focusing on who I am, I am not focusing on my education or my marketing experiences or what I can do for my customers.

I have been presenting the state of marketing and the future of marketing, with only the content in mind. I have hardly mentioned my name or my business. At first, I thought that not focusing on me at all, would make them forget who I am. And if they didn’t forget, they would take my information and marketing techniques, and hire someone else to do the job.

But, that didn’t happen.

I am a strong believer in quality content and that content will change the world and make it a better place. I want to remove traditional ads, and make businesses stop hiding their so called secrets. I want them to share everything, and I will do my best to make people realize that it’s important that they open their doors and invite their enemies inside.

I got my first client by being authentic, building relations, and creating trust, by focusing on content.

I didn’t say it, but I could have: Use what I just told you either by doing it yourself, or hire someone else, it doesn’t matter, as long as you please focus on content. I don’t remember if I said please more then once, but I could have, because the marketing method was the message.

My first client and why I am the proudest man alive

At the time I decided that I was starting a business, I started to think about who my first client would be. I had no idea, but I knew that I would have said yes to almost anybody. The first client is important, because I really need money and testimonials. Social proof is one of the most important ways to get more clients, so I would have said yes to almost anybody, just so I could get started.

I love living in my small Norwegian town. The town is Halden, and it’s very close to the border of Sweden. It’s just a little more than a one-hour drive from Oslo (the capitol of Norway) and aproximately a two-hour drive from Gothenburg (an awesome Swedish town). The nature is fantastic, and it’s a quiet place and a very safe environment for my kids. I’m eager to get more people to visit and realize how fantastic it is in Halden. I want tourists to come from all across the world. And I’ll do my best to market my home town while doing my best to market businesses.

My first client is Grenserittet, one of the largest mountain bike (MTB) races in Norway and Sweden and the biggest MTB Race between two countries. I’ll get the chance to not only make my first client the happiest client in the world, but I get the chance to market the place where I live, the place where I have spent most of my life, and where my parents, grand parents and great grand parents spent most of their lives.

But that’s not all.

I’m so proud of working with a client with such an awesome product. I don’t have to do a thing to make them change what their currently doing, because their product is amazing, and their customers are saying it as well. But, together we’ll make a difference. We’ll turn this race into an unforgettable experience both online and offline, because it’s not just about the race anymore. It’s about being 100% authentic, creating strong relations, and trust, based on content.

Here’s a video from Grenserittet. Do you understand why I’m so excited and the proudest man alive?

You are the first person I stumbled upon when I started my Social Media and IB Marketing journey. I greatly appreciated your book and the threads that led me to others that have helped me grow my business.

I recently left a stable gig of 5 years to pursue my dreams more fully. Some days it is un-nerving and yet I have not been happier and more excited about life. Enjoy the journey!

    • Hi Harleena,

It’s awesome that you find the place where I live beautiful. There are so many wonderful places in the world, and I have been doing some traveling, but it’s funny how I always keep thinking about this small town. It might always be like that for most people that have been living in a town for that long, but I just can’t stop thinking about how wonderful it is to live here. If I could just change one thing it would be the weather. It’s just too cold here 🙂

Thanks a lot for your kind words Harleena, your support is really something and it helps me keep hustling to reach my dreams.

  11. John says:

I get excited when I’m telling the story about my brand new company. I just can’t help it 🙂

Thanks a lot for all your kind words Sergio, your support is awesome.

  13. Ruth Zive says:

Bravo! I am so proud of you Jens! From one content marketing strategist to another – no doubt in my mind that our expertise is a hot commodity. Good luck, and I look forward to hearing about how your business grows and evolves (desperation, by the way, is a great motivator! My business took off when I quit my job…needed to put food on the table :-))

    • Thanks a lot Ruth. You’ve been a huge inspiration. I know that content marketing is what I want to be doing, and from reading your blog and your ebooks, I’m even more sure. It’s so much fun to finally be showing local companies the real power of this marketing technique.

Desperation is indeed a great motivator, I’m not sure if I’m smiling or crying when I’m thinking about what’s going to happen in April 🙂

  14. Jivaldi says:

Nice Jens! It’s taken my company only 14 years to finally be in a position, well..where we need to be. Even so, with all the peaks & valleys, I wouldn’t change the experience for anything. I remember the first couple months running the business and the incredible sense of freedom that I felt. Now, many years later I’m starting to feel that same feeling again. Seeing your post brought me back. Good luck and remember that passion and perseverance will shield you against all this industry will throw at you.

    • Hi Jivaldi,

Wow, 14 years. I am going to hustle every single day to get the chance to enjoy my freedom and doing what I love to do. I’m crossing my fingers that I’ll make it for 14 years 🙂

Thanks a lot for your kind words and support.

  15. Jianna Gonzalez says:

Thanks for the information and for sharing your knowledge.

  16. James Martin says:

Thank you for any other informative web site. Where else may I get that kind of info written in such a perfect method? I have a venture that I’m simply now operating on, and I have been at the glance out for such info.

  17. Carolyn says:

Way 2 Go, Jens! I am soooo excited for you, though not surprised. My only question is will you remember us little folks when you become a superstar? Never mind, you’re a superstar already in our books.

Seriously, though. I am very proud of your immediate success. You rock and any client can count itself among the lucky to have discovered a diamond in the rough.

Please continue to keep us posted as you become:

    1) a best-selling novelist
    2) a successful entrepreneur
    3) a rockstar.

Oh, wait a minute. You already are a rockstar.

One question: would you hate me forever if I confessed to you that my grandfather came to the US from Gothenberg? Just curious. 😉

    • Wow Carolyn, you are too kind 🙂

I won’t be any of the things that you describe, but I love the support. I’m sitting in my living room in front of the fireplace with my MacBook Pro on my lap. I’m coughing, drinking tea, trying to write, coughing, drinking tea etc.. but that’s why it’s so much fun being able to do things online.

Now I can work from where ever I am, and when ever I feel like it, and because I really love what I’m doing, I work even when I should be in bed. It’s 100% fun, and I rather do this than almost anything else.

Gothenburg is actually one of my favorite cities in the whole world. But that’s mostly because it’s very close by, and I have been there so many times that it feels like I know every single street.

  18. Bill Dorman says:

Awesome dude; quite the leap of faith. I wasn’t sure if you were quitting the university job or not. I guess no more walking for you, huh? Now you better be biking………:).

I would love to come visit; in fact, we will be more than happy to stay at your place. Just don’t break out the Speedo……

In all seriousness, I would love to visit that part of the world; my wife is not much of a traveler, but maybe some day.

Best of luck to you my friend.

    • Hi Bill,

Thanks a lot. I decided to quit the University (well, I have a 100% leave without pay, so I can come back if this new business thing doesn’t work out) in order to dedicate all of my time to pursue freedom 🙂

I’ll keep walking, I’ll just find some new routes.

I promise you I’ll hide the speedo when you come and visit. My door is always open, just let me know when you come, I need a few days heads up so I can plan everything 🙂

I see you all over the web on various sites and blogs, had to come over and say Howdy.

    • Thanks a lot. It’s hard to describe how excited I am, but this has been something I just didn’t think was possible just a few months ago. Now, I’m already working with my first client, and what a client 🙂

    Hey Jens,
Congratulations! It is a great feeling to find your first customer. It is exciting but scary…
I had my first customer before launching officially my business and I thought that i was not well preapred…Actually now I know that I would never be well prepared! It is by finding the first customer that we actually realize that we are ready and we do our best!

    • Congratulations! That’s awesome.

And, thanks a lot. I’m not prepared at all, but it’s like you said. I would probably never be prepared for my first costumer. I was thinking that I would have the time to finish my own strategy, and my website etc.. but so far I haven’t even been able to register my company 🙂

      • Lenia says:

Thanks a lot Jens! It is kind of you.
Yes, I agree with you. I would like to have more time to complete my business plan but that is OK. If business is calling us we have to answer!

        • Absolutely. Focusing on business is actually completely new to me. I have just been working at the University and blogging for fun. And now that I have to focus on business, I understand how many things I just don’t have the time to do, because I need to focus on what’s making me money 🙂
