Marketing with Social Websites

Millions of people are using websites like facebook and twitter every single day. New social websites are appearing every week (at least that’s what it seems like). I have talked to many people that are getting huge amounts of traffic from twitter alone.

It seems that social marketing was one of the best ways to market any product or service during 2008, and it seems like it might be one of the best ways so far this year. I am talking about emphasizing relationships using social websites like Facebook and Twitter in order to interact with potential customers.

But, for people like you and me, should we really be spending our time trying to figure out how to get traffic from social websites?

In order to answer this, I will ask you five questions.

How important are backlinks?

There are many advantages when it comes to marketing on social websites. One of the major benefits is all the backlinks you get. If you are not familiar with backlinks; they are links that are anywhere on the Internet and lead back to your site. The more backlinks you have the higher youíll rank with the search engines. You will get traffic from each link directly from the social website, but you will also get more traffic from ranking higher with the search engines.

Backlinks are time consuming, but are they worth the effort?

Is blogging really the King?

Blogging is a great way to get more traffic to your site. I am receiving more than 700 unique visitors a day. And that’s only from writing. I don’t have time to market my blog, or do seo related stuff. Search engines love blogs and people enjoy reading blogs.

But in order to get traffic to your blog, you need to be a fairly decent writer. If you are not, should you still go with blogging in order to market your products?

Should you create your own videos?

YouTube is wildly popular on the Internet and itís getting even more popular as I am writing this. People love to watch videos and people love to get a look into other peopleís lives. YouTube allows people to do both.

To be honest with you, even the worst looking videos get traffic. Just create any kind of video and place a link back to your site at the end of the video – that’s how easy you can get traffic from YouTube. But I would probably never create my own video, that’s because if I do, I want it to be close to perfect. In other words, I would probably never finish the video.

Would you want to add a crappy video to YouTube?

Why use Twitter and Squidoo?

Twitter and Squidoo are just two of many social websites that allows you to have a page and to interact with other users. Twitter is more simplistic than Squidoo. Both are easy to set up.

It’s easy to use twitter, it’s an ongoing process though, you should do it on a daily basis. While Squidoo is more like a set and forget website. Twitter is different, your followers will interact with you seconds after your tweets. It’s a fairly easy tool when it comes to creating a network, while Squidoo ranks very well with the search engines.

Twitter and Squidoo are not necessarily time consuming, but I have heard that they are very addictive. Watch out.

Do you need to bookmark?

Every time I upload any type of social website content, people tell me that I need to bookmark it using a social bookmarking site. It will help me rank better with the search engines because I will have more backlinks leading to my site.

I agree, it sound like the perfect thing to do. But as most of the stuff described above, it’s time consuming. You can’t just bookmark your content, and wait for the search engines to start sending you visitors. If you want success with bookmarking, you should be active, interact with other users and bookmark many websites, not just your own.

Conclusion: Marketing with social websites are time consuming. Marketing is time consuming. Therefore, you need to focus on what you are good at. If you enjoy social websites, stick with a few, don’t do them all. Why not Twitter and Squidoo?
