JK Rowling marketing gay Dumbledore

Sometimes a famous singer can help promote a really good cause, just look at Bob Geldof and Bono. Sometimes one of the most famous authors might say something that helps promote a really good cause, but at the same time her words could also mean that it’s all about marketing herself and her books.

I guess it`s time to present my thoughts on J.K. Rowling and the gay Dumbledore.

The story starts this morning, when I read about the latest stunt from J.K. Rowling, the author of the books about Harry Potter. It was one of the first stories I noticed in one of the major Norwegian newspapers (the article is in Norwegian). My first look at the newspaper headlines was the image below (it says, with rather big letters, “Dumbledore is gay”).

I had to take a look at the article and see what was going on. I am not a huge Harry Potter fan, even though I have read most of the books and watched the movies. So, I wasn’t really aware of any rumors or if this was a marketing stunt, or if it was regarding the actor playing Dumbledore.

The story was this;

JK Rowling was during her American book tour asked if Dumbledore found true love. “Dumbledore is gay,” she replied, before adding that he’d fallen in love with his rival Gellert Grindelwald.

Why did JK Rowling announce this to the world?

If we use a marketing perspective on her announcement, I can think of three reasons:

By announcing this, the whole world will for sure get the news, and there will be even more news about Harry Potter. I guess that more people will read the books and more people will be watching the movies. Not because Dumbledore is gay, but because people will be remembered about Harry Potter once more. If they haven’t read the books or watched the movies, they might now. And if they have read the books or watched the movies, they might read and watch them all over again, because they will want to read it / watch it with this new information in mind.

But maybe JK Rowling are looking out for the gay community? The more gay people that appear in books or movies (especially if they appear as a hero), the more visible gay people will become, and the more likely it is that gay people will be accepted as the rest of us. In the end society will become a better place for gay people.

Or, this can all just be a part of the story how she thought Dumbledore should be all along. But she didn’t want to tell us this before she finished writing the Harry Potter books. Now, she can tell the world what she had thought about all along. The secrets of each character.
