Internet Marketing as a competition

Lately, I have been thinking about how I feel about Internet marketing and how I think other people feel about it. And I think that what your thoughts are about Internet marketing in general will define what you do online.

Do you think of Internet marketing as a competition?

If you do, you might look at other people as your enemies or your competitors. You won`t share any of your thoughts or any of your new marketing ideas. If they become successful, it means that you won`t (or something like that).

If you think of Internet marketing as a competition, it means that you won`t help other people unless you will gain something from it. You will help them if you earn money, or if they will join your list or something that will help your achieve your goals.

If you look at Internet marketing as a competition, you might look at all other Internet marketers with suspicion. You might think that the reason why they are sending you emails or why they are promoting something, are not because they are trying to help other people or because their products are really good, but because they are there only for the money and to be better at Internet marketing than you. They are trying to be better at it than you will ever be.

If you look at Internet marketing as a competition, you will never (or not very often) vote for posts, like this one, at StumbleUpon, Digg, Reddit or any other social bookmarking community. If you share it, the author will receive more traffic, and this way the author might receive more traffic than you.

It’s more than just money. It’s what they enjoy. I was thinking about this recently.. If Google bought me out and I had millions.. I’d still want to do something online, because it’s what I’m good at and I enjoy it.

It`s probably true. If I got my hands on millions, I would probably stop working and stay at a beach somewhere, but probably only for a year or so.

Then it would be back to whatever I am doing 🙂
