I have to admit, I am not currently using Squidoo and I am not sure if I am missing out or not. But this is the story why I am not using it, what I think about it and if I am going to create my squidoo lens or not anytime soon.
Squidoo (an interesting name) was founded by a very interesting man (Seth Godin) and launched in October 2005. I signed up what seems to be a long time ago, I made my lense, but nothing really happened… I wasn`t sure what to do with it and why I had joined and created the lense, other than that it was brand new and free.
What is Squidoo?
According to the Squidoo site,
Squidoo is the world’s most popular site for people who want to build a page about their passions.
That sounds interesting, and according to Wikipedia,
It is a platform designed to make it easy for anyone, for free, to set up a single page on a topic he or she knows or cares a lot about… Squidoo is a network of user-generated lenses –single pages that highlights one person’s point of view, recommendations, or expertise. Lenses can be about anything, such as ideas, people or places, hobbies and sports, pets or products, philosophy, and politics.
To me Squidoo is another way to make your own website, an easier way and a different way. It takes a few minutes to make a lense (and the lense is really your site), you can have as many lenses as you want (at least I think you can). There are many different “modules” that you can use to set up your lense and you can use different affiliate programs to earn money from it. Some of the money will go to Squidoo, some will go to charity and some will be yours (not sure how many percent).
To me Squidoo was most interesting as a new method to drive traffic to my blog. I didn`t need a new site / lense in order to write more about something I am passionate about. I didn`t understand how to go about it at first, but I have heard that there are many ways to do it.
Several companies / people have been making money from showing people like you and me how to drive traffic to their sites at the same time as they are earning money from Squidoo.
Here are a few of them:
I suggest that instead of buying one of the ebooks above, you should download a free and very interesting e-book / guide on how to create your lense and how to do all the right things on squidoo. It`s only 32 pages and it`s very good. If you want even more information, you might want to buy one of the books above.
Is Squidoo different?
Well, it depends. It sort of looks like many services that I have seen before, but at the same time something both looks and feels different. I think that most people that are using Squidoo today, is using it because of the interesting opportunity to earn money, but at the same time it`s very easy to make a website.
Is it really that different?
I think the interesting part is that Squidoo ranks very well among search engines. If you create your own lense and it becomes popular at Squidoo, you might get a lot of extra traffic from Google and Yahoo. To me, this is the really difference between Squidoo and other similar services.
I also like the charity part. It`s a great way to donate money to charity without having to do any job yourself, just create content and make your lense become a popular one and you will help people in need. I am not sure which charities Squidoo donates money to, but hopefully they are open about it (maybe it`s written somewhere on their website).
Will I create my lense at Squidoo anytime soon?
At the moment I am not really sure. I sort of want to, just to test and see if it works better than the last time. I have a lot more information today, and I would think that if Squidoo works, it would work a lot better for me this time. If I am going to create my lense(s) I am not sure if I should create one (or more) that are related to my blog or not. I am not sure if my lense(s) should just be a copy of my blog`s content or if I should make a lense completely different, about a topic that I am passionate about but a topic that I don`t have the time to start a blog about.
I guess what I should be thinking about is why should I create a lense at Squidoo? Is it because I want more traffic to my blog, or is it because I want to write about something new?
At the moment I am more interested in getting more people to read my blog, and I am not sure how Squidoo can help me with that. Before I create my lense, I am at least going to do some research into how to use Squidoo to drive more traffic to my blog and I might even buy an ebook, just to see how it can be done.
If you have any experience with Squidoo, I would be very interested to know about it. It`s a very interesting community, but can it provide people like me with more traffic? Or should people that want to use Squidoo only to help themselves get more traffic really stay away from Squidoo? I am not sure if there is such a thing as spam at Squidoo or not, but I can only imagine how many people who have tried to earn money from Vlagra and other pills at Squidoo.
