I believe it. There are many secret groups out there, you know the ones, they go to your site and click an ad for you that returns a high cpc. Truthfully I cannot see the sense in this, having more visitors and paying to get them really defeats the purpose of starting a site. Although it is another way to make a few dollars on the web.

Thanks again, I see your point. I am just not completely sure that Google’s patent really is the sound principle of web democracy (because Google is the only one that really knows the contents of PageRank). If it was a democracy, the code should have been open to all to see and understand what really happens. But that’s another story

But when you say that Text Link Ads sole purpose is to boost this popularity, isn’t it like that with all link advertisements or is it just Text Link Ads that are different? When you want to advertise on other websites for a product or your blog, is it different if you use TLA or Adbrite or Bidvertiser when it comes to PageRank?

I have always thought that the point of using these services was just like using AdWords and that was to increase the visibility of your ads and get clicks to your site.

Although Google own the patent for “PageRank” and it is an abstract formula, it is based on the sound principle of web democracy.

A PageRank score whittled down is the chance a websurfer will land on any given page – so this boils down to the page “popularity”. Page popularity is measured by volume and authority of links, the more popular the page, the more of these it should have it hence it rises up the rankings.

The *only* reason people buy TLA links is so they can artificially boost this popularity – a metric used by Google. So you see, “Page Popularity” is not owned by Google, – only the way of measuring it, which is why people are trying to exploit it.

The links on a page from Adsense are Javascript, search engines do not read/follow javascript or javascript links. Therefore no authority/popularity is passed and PageRank remains unaffected.

Hi Mark,

Thank you for your comments. I can see your point, even though I don´t regard PageRank as having anything really to do with web democracy. PageRank is owned by Google, and nobody but Google knows the “codes” of PageRank.

To me Text Link Ads is just another way of earning money from advertising, just like I would have been from AdSense. I have heard that using AdSense will not undermine the “democracy” of PageRank (why is that?), but I really don´t know much about this.
