I agree regarding Imagine and Lennon, in fact I used to play along with the record on my guitar.I wonder how many of today's songs will live on for so long? I am sure hardly any. I think if you try to write songs with commercial angles in mind from the START, then the song will fail. Of course, people do that today, but a lot of it is computerised, people do not have to actually sing and play well for todays hit songs.In some cases, it has been other way around, art for art's sake.
