How to Personalize your Autoresponder Messages

I am not sure if you have noticed, but I have a few new banners at my blog. They are all saying something like “what is the most important question?”

If you click on one of them, you will end up at this page. You will be able to send your most important question to me, and I will do my best and try to answer it. Most likely, I will write a post at my blog, if I have too many questions or the question is not relevant for my blog, I will send you an email with my answer.

Today I am trying to answer a question from Chris. His question is:

“How to add a person’s name on a pre-written autoresponder message”

I am using AWeber as my autoresponder, and my answer will be based on this. If you are using another service, you can add a comment with the code for this service. I am not sure which autoresponder Chris is using, it might be the one I am using or it can be any of the other top autoresponders. I am not sure, but I think that all the autoresponders got different codes for making the emails personal. Be sure to check yours for the right codes, because there are nothing as embarrasing in Internet marketing as sending out an email with the wrong personalization codes.

Anyway, the first thing you need to do regardless of which service you are using, is to get the names of your subscribers. Without this data, you won’t stand a chance of personalizing your prewritten messages. You need to publish some kind of form where people need to sign up with their firstname and e-mail address. I am not going to explain how you make a subscription form, but if you really want to know, please just send me the question and I will do another post about that. Just look at the top of my blog, and you will se an example of a subscription form.

What you do in order to personalize your prewritten messages, is that you click on the message that you want to send to your list of people, then you just find all the personalization codes. It’s located just above the editor.

Just find the code you need, and click it. The code will be inserted into the editor.

The personalization code that I use the most is {!firstname_fix}. This will display the firstname of each of your recipients. For instance, if I would send an e-mail to myself, it would say in the beginning something like Hi {!firstname_fix}. In the email that I would recieve, it would say Hi Jens. It’s as simple as that.

This is powerful, because this short code will make the email look very personal. You can add this code anywhere you like in the contents. But as you see from the image above, there are many other codes you can use as well.

Very good post Jens. I agree regarding Imagine and Lennon, in fact I used to play along with the record on my guitar.

I wonder how many of today’s songs will live on for so long? I am sure hardly any. I think if you try to write songs with commercial angles in mind from the START, then the song will fail. Of course, people do that today, but a lot of it is computerised, people do not have to actually sing and play well for todays hit songs.

In some cases, it has been other way around, art for art’s sake. With many great talents undiscovered…

    Hi Mark,

Thank you. I am still waiting for a new “imagine” to come along, but I guess I will have to wait a long time…
