Google Plus Business Pages are Changing Everything

I have started to use Google Plus, but I’m not very active. At first, I created my profile, just because I wanted to test and see what it was all about. Now, I’m using it like I’m using Facebook, and it’s not part of a strategy. It should be, but it’s not.

I’m currently working with my first client, and since I have been reading a lot about Google Plus lately, and since more than 100 million people are already using it, I am thinking that I need to create a Google Plus Business Page for my client. It seems that very few people in Norway have created a Google Plus Business Page, but like with Facebook, it’s better to be early than wait for people to join.

Google Plus Business Page – Why create it?

The only reason I am creating a Google Plus Business Page, is because I am a strong believer that what Google is doing right now is going to change everything.

I’m still kind of struggling in order to find a way to use a Norwegian Google Plus Business Page, because there are few other businesses to follow, and there are few people to have conversations with on Google Plus. But I’d like to start adding content, and see what happens, instead of waiting for people to arrive.

10 Tips for using a Google Plus Business Page

To em, a Google Plus Busienss Page, is first and foremost another method of creating relationships with people and building trust. But it’s also a way to get better ranking on Google. I don’t know much about this yet, but I have read enough to understand that this is happening.

There are at least 10 tips that you should know about, in order to get the most out of your Google Plus Business Page:

1. Strong profile

In every single social media site, creating a strong profile, with a lot of information, is very important. You should add details about who you are, and you should add pictures and videos to your Google Plus Business Page.

2. SEO – keywords

I have started to use Long Tail Pro for my keyword research, and when I create the Google Plus Business Page, I will add the right keywords and optimize the profile for the search engines.

3. Communicate

Your customers might not be on Google Plus yet. Your potential customers might not be there. Well, it doesn’t matter. Start to communicate with the people who are using it. Create relations, build trust. Your customers will eventually show up.

4. Hangout

I have never tried a hangout on Google Plus, but I understand how powerful a video hangout can be for a Google Plus Business Page. This is where you can talk with your prospects. It makes the conversation a lot more personal, and it builds a strong relationship.

5. Customize your url

When you create a Google Plus Business Page, you’ll get a long URL for your page, and it’s almost impossible to remember. With, you can create a short and nice URL, one that everybody will remember.

6. Add photos

Photos are a very important part of a Google Plus Business Page. Add many photos, in order to create a strong profile, but also as a way to let people see who you are and what your business is all about. It’s true, a picture is worth a thousand words.

7. Mentions

When you share something on your Google Plus Business Page, be sure to mention other people and pages in your status update. This way, they’ll be notified that you have mentioned them, and it makes it so much easier to have a conversation.

8. Add people to your circles

A Google Plus Business Page is a lot like Twitter. The easiest way to get more followers, is to find interesting and targeted people to follow, and once you follow them, the chances are high that they’ll follow you back.

9. Market it on your website (and on other social media sites)

Don’t just try to find followers inside Google Plus. You should create a badge for your Google Plus Business Page and add it to your blog. This way it will be a lot easier for people to find you. You should also spread the words via other social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

10. Use hashtags

Like Twitter, you can use hashtags on your updates on your Google Plus Business Page. When you add # and starts to write a word next to it, you’ll see various examples of hashtags you can use. Once you use a hashtag, it will not only be possible to click it to see other related updates, but you’ll show up in search for the hashtag.

Your turn: Do you have a Google Plus Business Page? And, do you have any tips on how to use it?

    • Hi Sarah,

I haven’t been using Google Plus for long, but I have been following the developments and because they’ve integrated search, it seems that Google Plus will be very important in the future. And that’s why we should create a business page as soon as possible and start testing. The sooner the better πŸ™‚

Thanks, Jens. This was very helpful. I truly don’t know yet whether Google + will take off. It doesn’t seem to have the fervor of the new kid on the block, Pinterest, but maybe it’s slow and steady.

I have a business page for The Wonder of Tech but I didn’t think to use hashtags in my comments. Thanks for that handy tip!

Are you going to make a business page for your new business, Jens? I hope you do!

    • Hi Carolyn,

To me, what Google did with integrating G+ with their search, makes a huge difference. It seems that if we’re active on G+, we’ll have a huge advantage when it comes to traffic from their search engine, and I just need to keep testing this to see if I can understand how it works πŸ™‚

I don’t have a business page for my business yet, but I will as soon as I launch the Norwegian blog. I’ll let you know as soon as it’s ready. Now you’ll have to learn Norwegian πŸ˜‰

    Informative Jens!

This is one part I still need to do, and have been stuck as I have yet to make an appropriate logo for my blogs! Each time I read something about Google Business Pages, it reminds me to work on it.

Yes indeed, it’s getting really tough to be present on all social networks, and something or the other does take a back seat. Guess we need to juggle a little between all of them, as and when we get the time! And G+ is surely catching up a great deal.

Loved the way you have explained everything so well, and am surely going to get down to it this weekend.

Thanks for the wonderful reminder πŸ™‚

    • I’m still thinking about how I should manage all the various social media sites. Right now, I feel that I’m not really social on any of them πŸ™‚

At first, I thought that I needed to be active on no more than 4 social media sites. I just didn’t have the time, and then I discovered Pinterest. So now it’s five. But, I’m thinking that I probably should stick to one or two, and be a lot more active on them in order to drive traffic and have some interesting conversations in order to build strong relationships. But, so far, I keep doing few things on many sites, and I don’t think that’s such a good idea πŸ™‚

    • Hi Eleanor,

Google Plus is very important, no doubt about it. I use the social networks a little different, but the reason why I believe Google Plus is so important is because that they have integrated search in Plus.

Thanks a lot, Jens! Useful and informative post as usual, I’m not an active user of G+ like you, but looks like gotta start using it for Google’s sake!

    • Hi John,

I’m not really that active on G+, I have a profile and a business page for my client, that’s a about it. I don’t spend much time, and I usually don’t get involved in many conversations. I do more on Facebook, at least at the moment.

I think you accidentally called this blog: “Google Plus Business Pages are Changing Everything” when it should have just been called “How to create a Google Plus page”. …

    • Hi Paul,

I should probably have written more about the real benefits of Google Plus, and why I think it’s so important to create a business page. I added a straight forward reason why, and that’s because it’s Google and they have integrated it with search, and that’s huge… but I should have focused more on this.

      Sorry about that.

  10. Kimberly says:

Thank you for recommending I was a bit distracted knowing how long my google plus page URL was. I also noticed how google plus is continuously making improvements on users pages. There is still so much to explore and hope I can utilize features like hangouts on promoting my site.

    • Jens P. Berget says:

      Hi Kimberly,

My pleasure. I understand how hard it is to keep track of the long urls, and as soon as I had the chance on Facebook, I got myself a short one πŸ™‚

I haven’t tried hangouts either, but I’m going to very soon.

I’m annoyed by Google+. Another social media platform to master. Argh. But thanks to this straightforward post, I have indeed gone ahead and created a business page. One more thing to check off of my list :-).

    • Hi Ruth,

That’s what I’ve been thinking too, and that’s what I’ve been thinking about Pinterest… they just keep adding more and more interesting social media sites, and I feel that I’m missing out if I’m not there. One thing is for sure, I’m not going to miss out anything that Google is starting πŸ™‚

  12. Jaydip Parikh says:

Yes, Google Plus will be next BIG thing. One point you can add is that it will help you to gain higher ranking when people added you in circle they search while using loving in gmail or another Google site. Even I wrote article about Google Plus few days back & its as comment luv now.

    • Hey Jaydip,

I’ve started to use G+ for a Norwegian client, and that’s a lot harder than in English. Very few Norwegians are using G+, and it’s hard to connect with people in Norway. I need to keep working hard to understand what to do to get people in circles, I might have to switch to writing in English πŸ™‚

  17. Brian L says:

Hi Steve, I am creating a Google+ Business page for one of my clients and am wondering if I should create a seperate Google+ profile using a the businesses email address instead of my own personal Google+ account. Thoughts?

  18. problem with a business page is that it’s hard to use and customize for updates – you must go through your personal account. google has not worked out the kinks yet – so it is kind of a wasted effort. you must do it – but it takes time and does not return great ROI yet.

  19. Islam Muslim says:

Thank’s for this () great tutorial. I was having a hard time with those.

  20. Google+ is definitely a great idea, but so far it seems it’s only reaching the businesses who are using it just to keep in touch, and nobody is really into it recreationally or actively. Hopefully it evolves past this!
