Forest app – stay focused on what matters most

Your mobile phone can be a great asset to your business, at the same time, it can be your worst nightmare. I have confessed that the iPhone is killing my productivity. That’s before I started using the Forest app. It’s been my secret productivity tool.

The reason you might be having productivity issues with your mobile phone, is that you keep doing tasks that are not part of your daily workflow. It’s easy to get caught up in all the various apps. It’s not that you’re playing games, it’s more an issue of spending too much time checking things, reading, doing research and doing the same things over and over again.

The forest app

If you’re anything like me, you need a system to keep your mobile phone away from you while you are working. I’m using a pomodoro app for Mac, so it’s not really an issue while I’m working. But, what the Forest app helps you with, and why I decided to start using it, is that it adds a layer of gamification to my focus. It makes it more fun and enjoyable.

The forest app is all about building a forest, by focusing on working. Don’t touch your mobile phone for 30 minutes, and you’re building a tree. If you use your mobile phone before the 30 minutes are over (or the time you’ve set, it can be more than 30 minutes), your tree will die and you have to start all over again.

You can use the forest app for iPhone, Android and Windows phone.

Gamification works; it’s part of how I use Todoist and it’s why I say that playing strategy games can teach you marketing. I started building one tree with the forest app, the next day I built two, now I keep adding more trees to my daily forest to keep progressing. It helps me stay focused, away from the mobile phone, when I need to get things done.

I have never heard of it but it sounds interesting. I’ll have to check it out.

I moved over to a Windows Phone a couple of months back and I’m guessing this won’t be available. I’ll take a look anyway as it sounds like an interesting app!
