6 Easy Ways to Get More Comments Now

When you start blogging, one of the first things you think about is that it’s like being inside a forrest, you’re all alone, and you need to get more comments. You consider more comments as a synonym of more traffic, and more traffic means popularity and a popular blog might help you earn money. This is part of running your online business. It sounds like a good plan, but it might not be one.

Before you continue, answer the question; why do you want more comments? There are many reasons why people work hard to get more comments; feedback is one of them. It’s hard to become a better blogger if nobody will leave you any feedback. More comments will be more work for you, that’s why it’s important to answer the question before you continue.

The reason we blog might change during the years; it might be personal and business. And, sometimes, we just need to write, and we don’t need feedback or anything from anyone. As a blogger, ask yourself why you are blogging, and create a good definition of success.

Blogging is hard work. It’s nothing like, write and people will come. You need to keep working and eventually you’ll see good results. The one thing you need is to experience progress. That’s why I started out by saying, you need a good definition of success. It’s so much easier to keep doing hard work, when you see that you are moving towards your goal (whatever your goal is).

The reason you’d want more comments to your blog as part of your business, is that engagement with your customers is important to build trust and a strong relationship.

1. Publish when people expect you to publish

Create a publishing schedule and tell your readers about it. You might be asking yourself; how often should I publish? There’s no right or wrong answer, it all depends. Seth Godin publishes a new blog post daily, many other famous bloggers publishes once a week. You decide when, and tell people about it.

2. Write short articles and ask for help

I have written long articles, and I have written many short articles. I get more comments on the short articles, and especially if I ask for help. I might just ask for your opinion at the end, but if I add the question as part of the headline, I get more comments.

3. Respond to comments

Reply to the comments. Think of the people leaving comments on your blog as your VIP followers, you want them to return to your blog and leave more comments. This is part of how you transform a lone nut into a leader.

4. Take a stand and hit a nerve

Don’t be generic. Be specific. Tell people who you are, what you believe and why. It helps to be controversial when you want to get more comments. Ask yourself, would you comment on the post?

5. Make announcements

If you’ve decided to start exercising and run a marathon, tell people. The same goes for everything relevant to your readers. It doesn’t just have to be about your business, if it’s about you, the announcement is relevant.

6. Comment on blogs

You need to comment on blogs. If you support other people, they’ll support you. Leave a comment on a blog, and most likely, the author will read your blog and maybe leave a comment. Besides that, there are 12 reasons why you should comment on blogs.

Your turn: How do you get more comments?

I started out by asking a question; why do you want more comments? That’s a question you need to ask yourself. If more comments is not part of how you make progress as a blogger, you might want to focus on something completely different. But, remember, comments is part of how you build trust and relationships as a blogger.

How do you get more comments? Are you doing something completely different and what works for you? Let’s discuss it in the comments.

    Hi Jens,

The most effective tool I have found for generating more comments is to comment on other blogs. When I am consistent about it I always see an increase on my blog.

  2. Papa says:

great tips, thanks for sharing! stumbled across this blog from a retweet by @thejackb and glad I did, enjoyed your post on productivity tools and can’t wait to learn more from your marketing tips!

  3. Hi Jens,

#6 is far and away the easiest way to get comments, from my experience. Give to get. I visit a handful of blogs daily to leave my thoughts. Sometimes it’s a paragraph, other times it’s 2 or 3 but usually I share a handful of sentences to drill home my take and to add value to the post as well. Works like magic, this strategy, as you sow, you reap. Keep on chatting so folks come back to your blog and chat with you too. Just make an impact whenever you comment and you’ll be golden.

    Thanks Jens!

    • Hi Ryan,

That’s my experience as well. And, when I stopped commenting on blogs for a few months, I didn’t get as many comments anymore. It was a very powerful experience. Commenting on blogs is an important way to build trust and relationships as well.

      Thanks for your comment.

  4. Hi Jens, Yes, Adrienne Smith and Harleena Singh get the most comments of any bloggers I’ve seen. They comment nearly everywhere, proving #6 is an effective way of getting comments at your blog.

  5. Adrienne says:

    Hey Jens,

Welcome back, great to see you again.

Yeah, you KNOW I love comments mainly because it’s the interaction with people that I really enjoy the most. It’s how I learn though too what to write about because my readers are always giving me great ideas.

I think comments are great for social proof as well but you’re right, not everyone is eager to put that kind of time into this. The best way for me though to get more comments is to comment on other blogs and of course respond to all of mine. It’s about building those relationships and we both know when you make those connections a good bit of them will be lasting. See, here I am checking out your post and we’ve known each other for years now. I’ll continue to support you Jens and we met through commenting. It doesn’t get much better than that.

    Hope you’re doing well.

    • Hey Adrienne,

It’s great to connect with you again. Yes, we met through commenting and that shows how powerful it is. I’ve realized that I have so many questions and that many of my blog posts is more or less questions for my readers. I want to know what they are using and if they have some of the same questions as me.

I have discovered that blogging is a great way (maybe even the best way) to learn, and I learn from reading other blogs and receiving answers through commenting.

      Thanks Adrienne.

  6. I think that letting users engage with comments via email is a great way to boost engagement as well.

Six excellent and extremely practical tips Jens!

And I’m so glad, none of them are overly techie!LOL!

I agre with Ryan, I’ll actively use # six until the cows
come home, because it’s definitely worked wonders
for both my free exposure and steady climb in the organic search listings!

Thank for sharing your excellent non techie strategies!

    • Hey Mark

Yes, they are not overly techie 🙂

I have just got back home from vacation, and I haven’t been online much for the past 5 weeks. Keeping up with commenting on other blogs and the relationships online has been hard when I’ve been living in a tent. But, now I’m finally back again 🙂
